….hear the music at http://cdbaby.com/cd/rozz the BELFAST COWBOYS was my next musical endeavor as I transitioned out of NEGATIVE TREND in SF 1978…bands were improvising and reforming constantly as the first wave of band were evolving…becoming interchangeable…the SLEEPERS W/ROZZ and NEGATIVE TREND W/RICKY performing on the same bill at the gay community center…THE NEGATIVE DILS ,..and even the NEGATIVE DILLENGERS …containing members of the DILS,AVENGERS, and NEGATIVE TREND…I had done the opposite and put together a band called the BELFAST COWBOYS with three new-to-the-scene-and-gone-just-as-fast members…with the notable exception of drummer BOBBY BARRAGE…who went on to form NO ALTERNATIVE (named after the BELFAST COWBOYS song) with JEFF REES and JOHNNY GENOCIDE….
BELFAST COWBOYS was taken from a song by and obscure english glitter blues act called THE PRETTY THINGS..it was a song off thier album SINGAPORE SILK TORPEDO..There was no significance to it and no one in the band was irish..the band went into peter miller studios and recorded what is now known as “ThE PoP sessions” for 50$ in 4 track….
the 9 song 19 minute masterpiece was never released…and when the BELFAST COWBOYS played live…somehow it became a party band…none of the musicans from the recording played in the live incarnation…instead it was JIMMY WILSEY and DANNY FURIOUS from the AVENGERS,..DENNY DIGREGARIO from TRUE BELIEVERS, myself and a plethora of gorgeous band girlfriends dressed up rockabilly, undulating as (back up singers?) THE BELFAST COWGIRLS….it was a spectacle of massive porportions which culminated with me going directly from the stage to the ER one night LOL,..not so much
the shows were punctuated with mad crazy covers of SLADE,KISS,BAY CITY ROLLERS and the “cowgirls” pouring shots of everclear in little paper mouthwash cups for everyone crowding around the front of the stage…the BELFAST COWBOYS provided a “Lets party,fuck politics” counterpoint to bands like the GERMS and DEAD KENNEDYS ..whom we played with at the infamous DEAF CLUB (a club run by and catering to deaf mutes…who could feel the thudding bass of PUNK music and LOVED IT) in the MISSION DISTRICT………………….BELFAST COWBOYS were a hit…yet none of the material from the “PoP SeSSioNs” was never played at those legendary shows…as heavy and hard as the BELFAST COWBOYS recording was…the live band was a campy lightheaded excursion down memory lane featuring RONETTES songs and a cover of SHAUN CASSIDYS “THATS ROCK AND ROLL”…cmon everybody get down get with it ..LoL
time passed and I was back in Portland..in the early 80′s..When THEATRE OF SHEEP was blowing up….I remembered the demo and what a sonic blast it was…I gave the 4 track master to TOM ROBINSON and had 100 cassettes duplicated of the 19 minute recording…I xeroxed some artwork and put the cassette in PARK AVEUE RECORDS (where a perponderance of the TOS “CATHARTIC AQUACADE” tapes were selling) as “NITECRAWLERS 78″…with no fanfare…sold a few…didnt really think about it again…
Time passed and THEATRE OF SHEEPS zenith neared…and the overwhelming drama of the SUPERNOVA and demise of TOS took center stage and aside from a few cassettes left in a box of memorabilia with a NITECRAWLERS 78 logo on them…the “PoP SeSSioNs” by the BELFAST COWBOYS ceased to exist….
then in 2000 ..this guy from WHITE NOIZE RECORDS started bugging me and coming around….he was a big NEGATIVE TREND,SLEEPERS,UXA,AVENGERS fan…all that old school SF stuff…he kept pressing me for material…I said “I have this”…and gave him a cassette of “thePoP SeSSioNs”….”Its not NEGATIVE TREND..same era though…it was a side project I was involved with…”
well,..he loved it…he thought the material was awesome …and wanted to release it…he kept coming around with grand schemes…and trying to network others from that scene thru me…I got more and more annoyed…I finally told him “Look, Im a suddenly single parent,i cant gig,.got a messy divorce to pay for and rent and bills that are overdue…I want cash…you can have all rights to do whatever the hell you want with it…own every note of every song…but I dont want to wait around for royalties or its just another pipe dream..I got real world problems…gimme cash up front and ITS ALL YOURS”…figuring he would balk and go away…
Surpisingly,.. he eventually did give me $1500, and then another $500 after having me sign several handwritten” uni-bomber manifesto” contracts..to own it outright..and I really didnt believe he would ever get it together and release it …but he did..
“ROZZ & NEGATIVE TREND;THE POP SESSIONS “was released by WHITE NOIZE RECORDS in 2001….and quickly won several pestigous awards and recieved glowing reviews…THE BIG TAKEOVER called it “the 3rd best document of the era” behind two AVENGERS releases…the SEATTLE paper reviewing it along side an REM review…like it was some legitimate punk never-before-heard-of masterpiece….that was the last i heard of it…WHITE NOIZE went underground and i knew I would never see another penny…I was just glad I got some cash up front…
then in late 2007…after finishing dates in SF with THEATRE OF SHEEP “PUNK LEGENDS” tour..I performed the material again with an awesome live band (the guy from WHITE NOIZE had resurfaced and put together) at the GENOCIDE BENEFIT at LENNON STUDIOS…the audience reaction to the anthemic M-16,NO ALTERNATIVE,NEVER SAY DIE, and I WONT BE PACIFIED was overwhelming…and I knew I wanted to get that music out there again
earlier in 2007 I also made aqquaintance with music attorney PETER VAUGHN SHAVER…who begin to help me clear up all my musical affairs…we filed to make all contracts with WHITE NOISE and MABUHAY RECORDS null and void…I regained ownership of this material only in the last several months and am now happy to release it on CDBABY as ROZZ of NEGATIVE TREND; BELFAST COWBOYS …ThE PoP Sessions”……9 songs 19 minutes of over the top punk…availble only as mp3 download…the 1000 CD copies gone long ago…I dont even have one
POSTSCRIPT…I just looked on CD BABY and it (http://cdbaby.com/cd/rozz )is up now..my link there..also I saw on CDBABY there is another cd by a Minneapolis band called “BELFAST COWBOYS…A TRIBUTE TO VAN MORRISON.”..oh great…avoiding one lawsuit and stepping directly into another LoL…my life should be a Movie…a movie titled ALLEY OF THE DOLLS of course…!……please consider adding THE BELFAST COWBOYS (mine) to your digital music collection when it becomes availible april 1st….
THE Mediterranean was a gritty greek cafe and tavern that specialized in cheap beer and low budget greek food..I came upon the place via AL THE ANTI-PAL (allen b. lloyd) who lived at KEARNEY HOUSE and went on to work for THEATRE OF SHEEP selling our buttons and t-shirts…he was also working in the dingy kitchen at the “MED” as it was called…he would get us free or half price pitchers of PABST there before and after rehearsels..or any “occaison”…at the MEDITERRANEAN I became friends with the owner…GEORGE TOULAHOUP-AH OH..PO…ya know…my greek isnt so good…we just called him GEORGE T….the other GEORGE being UGLY GEORGE,..a bukowski-esque drunk who would wax obnoxious at the MED’S open mike POETRY NIGHT…it was a slummy wonderful dive where if you were friends with GEORGE or AL THE ANTI PAL…you never left SOBER or HUNGRY……WALT CURTIS and the local literary illuminatti made the MED bohemian ground zero for the ever unpopular “Poetry”….students, musicans,drunks, berets and mohawks,and petty dramas of the seedy neighborhood locals…As the fledgling bands popularity grew ..and we became painfully aware that most of the BARS in town didnt want us .. the bands following was overwhelmingly underage…I approached GEORGE about doing SUNDAY AFTERNOON UNDERAGE SHOWS and he reluctantly agreed as long as “All the kids are out by 9pm”…we did shows with AL cooking up a spagetti dinner or greek food…and packed the tiny tavern with teens..and 50 cent champagne for the over 21 set..(that got us in trouble with liquor control commission).the stage was tiny..the size of a king size bed which made it very intimate…Jimi went wireless one time and I turned back during a lead to see he had left the packed building and was standing out on the yellow line down the middle of 16th and Burnside…going crazy on guitar…while cars whizzed by both directions honking thier horns and yelling…middle of the fucking street he does a 5 minute solo on “Manilla Romance”....the shows got a buzz and were a blast…for us and our fans..soon everyone wanted to play THE MED…VIOLENT FEMMES,..mini-national acts to numerous to mention..and the kids would come back during the week for falafels and coffee…a business arrangement that suited both of us very well… soon GEORGE would talk over beers about wanting to buy a club .”..a club…JUST FOR MUSIC..no cafe..no noise complaints..”
our shows became relatively hi-tech comparatively as we outgrew the MEDITERRANEAN TAVERN and began to headline STARRYNIGHT CLUB down the street…and our POSTERS would also evolve significantly from those early days the MED….but the half dozen or so memorable shows there (and the simple black and white xeroxed posters)were an important building block in the foundation of the storied history of THEATRE OF SHEEP….and portland rock history as well..
because with the profits of the Mediterraneans surge in popularity,..sooner rather than later GEORGE T realized his dream and opened the famed SATRYICON CLUB at 6th between couch and davis…out of loyalty to us…he tagged THEATRE OF SHEEP to play the very first night…george became famous..the club legendary..and up until he got out..if I showed up there,..he’d give a nod to the bartenders and my drinks were always free..sometimes joining me and my party to talk nostagicly about “the old days” at the MEDITERRANEAN

one of the most unique things about THEATRE OF SHEEP was the posters…THIS BLOG TO BE REFORMATTED..but go ahead and have a peek …as it is..I looked at the posters as a chance to explore the creative possibilities…TOS posters were made thru and old fashioned method and a connection with a basement printing shop named HALLENDERS, located underneath historic HUBERS on 4th avenue…our connection there, employee and aspiring musican himself…was DERBY O’DONNELL…DERBY would scout excess paper from other large projects…sometimes in odd sizes..other times we would cut to 11×17…sometimes odd colors and textures…we once did a run of 1300 SILVER LICK AND STICK POSTERS!..unfortunately, we could never find a viable way to properly moisten them…our tongues got tired after a few dozen posters went up..LOL…the first time thru the presses we would do a background color pattern…I was fond of LACE I xeroxed and enlarged to give a snakeskin/fishnet stocking-like image….then let the ink dry….2nd time thru often with another pattern in another bold color..often concentric circles or a different lace pattern….the third time thru was almost always in black and contained the basic information on the show…in some posters we employed a stalinesque tactic when members left the band …we simply erased them and used the same photograph
sometimes the posters came out good..other times too busy..but always unique…the old men who worked with DERBY at hallendar took great pride in being a part of this very alternative creative endeavor and did an awesome job..occaisonally adding a fourth or fifth color.so…anyhuzen…this is just a work in progress…I have a lot more to upload …I know this layout is a bit disjointed but I will get with my website guru (Ericka Meyers) and tidy it up a bit…so enjoy and check back for the finished product…as time permits I shall to chronicle every poster for every show..a daunting task as there were tons of gigs…I couldnt keep up creatively at times…so some were gems and other hastily conceived duds but all were colorful and interesting…so thats it for now…all artwork by rozz rezabek
